Founded in 1877 by Simon Günthermann, who died in 1890, his widow remarried in 1892 to Arnold Weigel, who ran the company until his death in 1919, expanding production to include cars, aeroplanes and more. His widow and two sons, Leonhard and Christian Günthermann, took over the running of the company. During the war, the factory was destroyed three times, before being rebuilt in 1951. The company closed for good in 1965.
