Mettoy
Northampton
1934 – 1983
Founded in 1934 by Arthur Katz and his cousin Philip Ullmann, who fled Germany and settled in England after the Nazis stripped him of Tipp & Co in 1933. His first toy plane was marked 1933 in large letters on the wing.
Mettoy acquired a certain reputation with its cars and aeroplanes, but had to cease toy production in 1940 to devote itself to the war effort.
The old range was taken over in 1945. In 1954, Mettoy launched Corgi Toys. In the meantime, Philip Ullmann returned to Germany to help his son at Tipp & Co.
Corgi Toys came to an end in 1983.
